2025 has been a revitalising year for Ben Pedroche, from rediscovering the joy of reading and music to seeing Independent As F*** connect with people around the world. Buoyed by that response and a renewed passion for writing, he’s heading into 2026 ready to turn the ideas in his head into his next book.
What have you been reading this year?
I’m terrible for buying books and never getting around to reading them, but this year I’ve been trying to catch up. The best thing about music I read was Arthur Baker’s autobiography, Looking for the Perfect Beat. As a lifelong hip-hop fan, I was aware of his contributions to rap, but not too knowledgeable about his work in other genres. He has a fascinating story and has been involved in so many projects.
Any new favourite films/TV programmes?
My wife and I have been somewhat bitten by the true crime bug this year, so lots of stuff about serial killers and other types of crime. It can get too much at times, though. We need to watch more comedy.
Any new favourite tracks, records or releases from the year?
I’ve enjoyed almost all of the albums by legacy artists that Nas has released this year as part of the Mass Appeal Legend Has It campaign, so music from Raekwon, Ghostface Killah, Slick Rick, Big L, Mobb Deep and De La Soul, with a project from Nas and DJ Premier still to come.
Have you been listening to any podcasts, audiobooks or radio shows?
I got a bit overloaded with podcasts this year, so I have been taking a break. The best one I listened to, though, was Searching for DOOM, about MF DOOM, obviously.
Heard any standout DJ sets or been to memorable parties or events in 2025?
Having a busy work and family life means I basically never get to go out these days, so that would be a no, sadly.
Have you found any new sources of inspiration or creativity over the last year?
Seeing Independent As F*** resonating with so many people this year has been inspirational, and reignited my passion for writing. It had been several years since my previous book came out, and I’d lost some of the energy. The response to the new book has made me remember why I love writing.
What are your reflections on your book now that it’s out? Has anything surprised you?
I’ve been very pleased with what has happened since the book came out in May. The reception has been positive, especially on social media, where I get messages from people telling me how much they love it, or sending photos where they’ve spotted it in shops all over the world. All of this has been a nice surprise, and I’m extremely grateful for everyone who has purchased a copy.
Any general reflections on 2025?
It’s hard to find positives with so much bullshit happening in the world, but for me personally, it’s been a mostly positive year.
What are you looking forward to in 2026?
Hopefully starting work on a new book! I have ideas in my head, but now need to spill the contents of my brain onto paper and formalise it into hopefully a coherent plan.
