2025 Roundup: Remi Rough

2025 has been a demanding but creatively rich year for Remi Rough, marked by the release of Future Language of the Ikonoklast and a renewed connection with the people and ideas that shaped it. Energised by readers’ unexpected responses, new artistic inspirations and standout live moments, he heads into 2026 ready for a major exhibition and the first sparks of another book.

What have you been reading this year?

Wiggaz With Attitude by Andrew Emery, great book and a hilarious true story. I’ve also been reading a graphic novel called Saga on Image Comics, written by Brian K Vaughn, a mad space opera about two planets and two species and a man and a woman from each planet. Kind of like a science fiction Romeo & Juliet.

Any new favourite films/TV programmes?

Slow Horses Season 5 was incredible; that programme just keeps on getting better and better. I also loved the Diplomat and by far my favourite film of the year was the Ballad of Wallis Island.

Any new favourite tracks, records or releases from the year?

Open Mike Eagle’s Neighbourhood Gods Unlimited is a standout album for me. I’ve had it on repeat. Human Error Club at Kenny’s House is also an utterly brilliant album.

Have you been listening to any podcasts, audiobooks or radio shows?

The Dad Bod Rap Pod is always great and Kathryn Ryan’s podcast is genius.

Heard any standout DJ sets or been to memorable parties or events in 2025?

Live-wise, I recently saw Loyle Carner in Paris, which was an exceptional gig. Then I got to see Youngblood Brass Band in London, which was amazing too!

Have you found any new sources of inspiration or creativity over the last year?

The peace of simply drawing has been very good for me this year. Sometimes stripping it back to basics can be a meditative thing.

What are your reflections on your book now that it’s out? Has anything surprised you?

I think I’ve been surprised at how people who are completely unrelated to the movement have found a connection to it. Also I’ve been amazed at all the incredible press we got on it.

Any general reflections on 2025?

It’s been a long, hard year, but I’ve managed to retain some creativity and reconnect with my Ikonoklast family, so that’s been amazing.

What are you looking forward to in 2026?

My exhibition with Agnes B in April and putting ideas together for another book.
